F1 whispers doubt Renault future

Speculation has stepped up a gear that 2009 could be Renault's last season in Formula One.

Team president Bernard Rey said this week that the Enstone-based squad's parent Renault Group has pledged its support for "this year."

This comment was followed by whispers in F1 circles that team management may have informed the latest meeting of the FOTA alliance that Renault engines will not be available to customer teams beyond 2009.
Sources are also reporting that nearly 100 staff at Enstone will shortly be shed, ostensibly due to the newly installed cost-saving measures.
In fact, the sources said precisely 98 staff may now already have been given notice that their employ is to end.

The sources informed that the majority of the losses will be limited to both the test team and the aerodynamic department.

Beechy's Dream Car

If you´re wondering what the ever rising computing power will mean for the graphical aspect of driving simulations, the following might give you an idea.

Imaging company Proper Graphics has created a virtual version of the Koenigsegg CCX supercar, made of 192.449 triangles. Even though the car is much more detailed than the vehicles in Gran Turismo 5, it has been crafted according to Polyphony Digital’s polygon and texture specifications.

Today’s systems and gaming consoles aren’t powerful enough to handle more than one of these beauties yet. Once the time comes, we´ll be in for some serious eye-candy as the high resolution pictures and video show.

Dennis to quit as McLaren F1 boss

Ron Dennis is to step down as team principal of McLaren and hand over to current number two Martin Whitmarsh ahead of the new Formula One season.
Dennis, 61, who has run McLaren since 1981, will stay on as executive chairman of the McLaren Group.
The 51-year-old Whitmarsh will take over McLaren's F1 operation on 1 March

"It's time for Martin to take over. It is 100% my decision - this is a job he will embrace and from now most race-day decisions will be his," said Dennis.

"I still have huge passion for F1 and I want to be supportive of Martin's responsibilities, but that will come purely in the form of voicing an opinion.

"Maybe they'll get my opinion when they don't want it! But I hope Martin will listen to my opinions, even if ultimately - as it will - the ultimate decision rests solely with him.

"This is the right time for this decision. But don't see this as some sort of retirement because it is the exact opposite.

"The first thing I must do is raise my own game because everybody realises this is a tough period in which to work. My decision - and it is solely, and exclusively my decision - has been made on the basis of what is best for McLaren.

"We are a very diverse organisation and we have a number of other projects ongoing, including the development of our road car, and that is going to be a real challenge.

"However, really I want to downplay this decision, because today is about the new car, where we're going forward as a team - it certainly isn't about my stepping down," added the 61-year-old.

Dennis merged his Project Four racing company with Team McLaren Ltd to form McLaren Racing in 1980 and took over as team principal in 1981.

Whitmarsh has been at McLaren since 1989, when he assumed the role of head of operations.

And he said: "It doesn't feel like a bombshell to me - Ron has reached this point and I was keen for him to dictate a timeframe - but I certainly didn't push him.

"I've worked with Ron for 20 years and he has had an incredible career, but Formula One is changing and evolving and so is this business."

The 2009 Formula One season opens with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on 29 March.

F1 1991 LE 1.0 - Released

Slimjim, TMF & EViL Group have released the Formula One 1991 LE mod for rFactor, bringing another historic F1 season to rFactor.

Based on Erik Van Leeuwen’s F1 1991 mod for GP4, these cars have been carefully converted to bring them to rFactor standard. The mod takes us back to a time when Formula One was still healthy as the grids were made up of up to 18 teams.

Please note that this is a leage-edition mod, meaning that all cars have the same physics for equal racing. If you´re looking for realistic 1991 cars, you should wait for the full historical version of this mod.

Although talks with Mercedes are still ongoing, the 33-year-old driver stated that he only wants to continue in DTM if he can drive a car of 2009-specification.

Ferrari to bring back pit lights

Ferrari plans to bring back its controversial 'traffic lights' pit stop system for the 2009 season. After several incidents last year, the Italian team abandoned the unique automated system following the Singapore Grand Prix, where Felipe Massa dragged the fuel hose down the pitlane.
But team manager Luca Baldisserri told the Italian newspaper La Stampa,"We have analysed the errors of 2008 and improved the system."
"Now an electronic programme will prevent the car from leaving the box when the fuel hose is attached,"he said.
The automated system, using sensors and buttons to show coloured lights to the drivers during pitstops, replaces the traditional 'lollipop' approach.
